STUDYING THE ANTIMICROBIAL EFFICIENCY OF THE “URO-BIOFON” IR-THERAPY DEVICES.I. Petrenko Research and Production Enterprise “Bionix”, 603137, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, e-mail: bionix@sandy.ru Abstact: The urogenital IR-therapy device “URO-BIOFON” is the world’s first effective antibacterial physiotherapy appliance of high selectivity designed for treatment of prostatitis, urethritis, cervicitis, orchoepididymitis, salpingoophoritis of chlamydial, mycoplasmic, ureaplasmic, staphyloccocal, trichomonadal, candidal and a number of other etiologies. When put to use the device inactivates the pathogenic strains of 15 microorganism families affecting mainly the urogenital system. Pathogenic strains are inactivated due to conformational changes in the specific proteins of the plasmatic membrane triggered by exposure to polarized IR radiation whose spectrum is identical to that of the inactivated pathogenic strains. The inhibiting transmembrane potential appearing at the plasmatic membrane of the pathogenic microorganisms hinders the intensity of the cell biochemical processes, weakening the cell’s protection. Complete removal of the inactivated pathogenic strains from the system comes as a result of their active replacement by commensal flora and elimination of the pathogenic strains by the elements of the human immune system. The “URO-BIOFON” inactivates the pathogenic strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi, prions, unicellular protozoa and their toxins, which suppress commensal microorganisms of respective families, thus restoring the activity and later the quantity of the commensal strains. Studies carried out “in vitro” demonstrated a diminished yield of pathogenic bacterial mass and an increased yield of bacterial mass of avirulent and commensal strains of microorganisms. The onrushing development of information technologies nowadays has resulted in advent of new approaches in modern medicine and biology – informational physiotherapeutical methods of disease prevention and treatment. A considerable number of studies have been dedicated to effects, caused by infra-red (IR) electromagnetic radiation of non-thermal intensity in biological objects. The world’s first highly effective antimicrobial device of physical IR-therapy “URO-BIOFON”, invented in Russia on the basis of Russian patent “The device for influencing the activity of a biological cell” [1], is a considerable step forward in treatment of some infectious diseases with microbial etiology. The appliance is designed for restoration of normal urogenital microflora during clinical and out-patient treatment of prostatitis, uerthritis, cevicitis, orchoepididymitis, salpingo-oophoritis with chlamidyal, mycoplasmatic, ureoplasmatic, staphylococcal, trichomonadal, candidal and a number of other etiologies. The device can be employed both as a monotherapy remedy and in combination with standard pharmaceuticals and physiotherapy methods. When operated the device emits modulated electromagnetic waves of 0.7-0.8mkm band (99% emissive power) and polarized 3-10000 mkm electromagnetic waves (below 0.1% emissive power), whose spectrum is identical to that of the affected pathogenic strains of the families and genera listed below: Chlamydiaceae, Spirochaetaceae (Spirochaeia, Treponema, Cristispira, Borrelia), Neisseriaceae (Neisseria, Moraxella, Acinetobacter, Kingella), Micrococcaceae (Micrococcus, Staphylococcus, Stomatococcus, Planococcus), Enterobacteriaceae (Escherichia, Klebsiella, Morganella, Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia, Proteus etc.), Trichomonas, Pseudomonadaceae, Mycobacteriaceae, Gardnerella, Mobiluncus, Bacteroidaceae, Enterococcus, Mycoplasmataceae (Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma), Candida, Papovaviridae. Exposure to the polarized IR-radiation weakens pathogenic microorganisms due to conformational changes taking place in the specific proteins of the plasmatic membrane [2,3] which leads to appearance of a cut-off potential Eoff at the plasmatic membrane of the pathogen, drop in the intensity of biochemical processes in the microbial cell and increase of its vulnerability. Complete removal of the above pathogens from the system is achieved due to their active replacement by commensal microflora and intensive elimination of the pathogenic strains by elements of the immune system. The potential at the plasmatic membrane of bacteria was measured by a field remote method through analysis of the physical fields formed by the cells. Over 90 thousand measurements have been made since 1989 revealing a substantial correlation between the activity and concentration of live biological objects in tissues both in acute and slow infection cases. ![]() The diagram in Fig. 1 demonstrates dependence of the Staphylococcus aureus strain activity in the patient with slow inflammatory process and the dynamics of the colony-forming units (CFU/ml) after the IR-therapy by means of ‘Bio-Phone”. The patient received treatment consisting of 4 daily sessions during 3 days. As evident from the diagram complete elimination of Staphylococcus aureus occurred after 50 hours from the start of the physical therapy. Duration of a single IR-therapy session remains constant and is 24 seconds. Frequency of administering treatment sessions is determined by the attending physician in accordance with the character of the inflammatory condition and may vary from one session in 2-3 days to 48 sessions administered daily (average frequency being 3-6 sessions a day). The treatment schedule should be planned so that the pathogenic strains are kept inactive throughout the entire treatment period. With diligent observance of the recommended therapy method complete purge of the organism of the above-mentioned pathogenic agents occurs in 98% cases. For patients with a pronounced immune deficiency duration of treatment may be increased tenfold. However, elimination of one or several pathogenic strains may initially make the organism somewhat less resistant to recurrent colonization by the same genus of strains since the colonization resistance of commensal microorganisms, which counteract colonization by pathogens, stays low and their variety is limited. Reasoning from the achieved results it is safe to assume that in order to enhance resistance of human organism to recurrent colonization by pathogenic flora, say, staphylococci, it is necessary to restore commensal flora of the same genus which in turn calls for prior elimination of the pathogenic microorganisms inhibiting the activity of commensal staphylococci. During operation “URO-BIOFON” inhibits the reproductive activity not only of the pathogenic Staphylococcal strains and their toxins but also that of other pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, prions, animalculars (their toxins) which hinder reproduction of commensal staphylococci, an important prerequisite for restoring the activity and widening the variety of staphylococcal commensal strains. According to our estimates the time necessary for restoration of commensal flora may vary over a wide range, from one month to 2 years, depending on the state of the commensal flora of a particular genus in the human organism, on the patient’s age, performance of the immune system, to what degree the commensal flora dominates over the pathogenic one in the food (especially in meat and dairy products), on environmental factors and social surroundings of the patient. The table below presents the results of 1865 in vitro experiments where “URO-BIOFON” was used to act on various representatives of genus Mycobacteriaceae, including virulent strains M.H37Rv, M.bovinus-8, M.avium; avirulent strains M.H37Ra and saprophile strains M.smegmatis
As evident from the table data the inhibited growth of the virulent laboratory strains is accompanied by 15% increase in growth ratio of avirulent strains M. H37Ra and 166% rise in growth ratio of strains M. smegmatis. Thus, the above in vitro experiments clearly demonstrate the operating principle of “Uro-BIOFON”, its high selectivity and efficacy as compared to other known methods of managing pathogenic microorganisms.
