Bacterial Vaginosis (Gardnerella infection) – is a disease associated with decay of normal vaginal flora caused by appearance of a great number of anaerobic microorganisms of species Mobiluncus, Prevotella, Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Peptostreptococcus and bacteria Mycoplasma hominis and less common Ureaplasma urealiticum in absence of inflammatory manifestations in the vaginal mucus. A sharp drop in quantity of lactobacilli occurs which normally inhibit proliferation of many a disease-causing germs. This results in rapid growth of gardnerellas, bacteroides, peptococci and other microbes.
Bacterial vaginosis symptoms.
Bacterial vaginosis is manifested by copious, frequently froathy, smelly vaginal discharge, drop in vaginal pH and changes in laboratory tests. Common are itching sensation, burning pain in the external genitals, unpleasant sensation during sex, pain in vagina and perineum. Bacterial vaginosis may come as a result of lengthy admission of antibiotics, hormonal and immune disorders and a number of other factors. Besides the discomfort Bacterial vaginosis increases risk of inflammatory conditions especially threatening during pregnancy.
