Quinsy, quinsy symptoms. Quinsy treatment

Quinsy (acute tonsillitis) is an acute infection, in the majority of cases caused by streptococcus. The source of quinsy infection are patients with various forms of acute streptococcal infections and ‘healthy’ carriers of streptococci. Of the greatest epidemiological significance are the patients with the locality of the microbial spot in the upper respiratory tract (tonsillitis, scarlet fever).

The tonsils provide the gate for the infection and the main source for its dissemination. From the tonsils streptococcus may spread with the blood and lymph stream, causing various complications, paratonsillar abscess, inflammation of the inner ear etc. Inefficient treatment may lead to metatonsillar maladies – rheumatism, myocarditis, glomerulonephritis. No pronounced immunity develops after quinsy. Quinsy treatment

Quinsy symptoms

The infection incubates 1-2 days. The onset of the disease is acute starting with chills, general weakness, headache, pain in the joints, painful swallowing. The chills last 15-30 minutes and are replaced by pyrexia. The temperature lingers in the 38-39° C range.

Initially disturbing only during swallowing the throat pain gradually grows becoming permanent and reaching its peak by the second day.

Tonsillitis is characterized by tenderness of the hardened jaw lymph nodes. The palatine arches, the tonsils and sometimes the soft palatine are scarlet during the first days. There may be pustules or accumulations of pus in the tonsils.
